What Yoga Mat Thickness Should I Choose?

Thickness is the first decision when buying a yoga mat, and the most misunderstood. More cushion is not always better. Here is how to choose.

Why thickness matters

A mat has two jobs: cushion your joints and keep you stable. Thickness shifts the balance between them. Too thin and your knees feel the floor; too thick and balancing poses feel wobbly.

The common options

3 mm and under: travel mats. Light and packable, minimal cushion. Best as a second mat or for experienced practitioners.
4 to 5 mm: the all-around range. Enough cushion for daily practice, stable enough for balance work. Most studio mats live here.
6 mm and up: maximum cushion. Kinder on knees and wrists, but heavier and less stable in standing poses.

Match it to your practice

Hot yoga and vinyasa: stay in the 4 to 5 mm range. Grip and stability matter more than extra padding once you start to sweat.
Restorative and yin: go thicker. You will hold poses for minutes, so comfort wins.
Sensitive knees or wrists: 5 to 6 mm, or layer a thinner mat over a blanket.
Travel: 3 mm, or a foldable mat that fits in a suitcase.

What we chose

The ID Yoga Mat is 4.5 mm (0.18 inch), the middle of the all-around range. A PU top on natural rubber for grip, with enough density to protect joints without wobbling in tree pose. One mat for studio, home and travel.

A quick way to decide

If you practice two to three times a week and want one mat: 4 to 5 mm. If you are mostly stretching and meditating: 6 mm. If you fly with it: 3 mm.
